Genuine Vintage Leather CasedThree Draw Stalking Telescope”Quick Focus Marksman”ByJ H  Steward406 The Strand  London EnglandCirca 1950An extremely nice mid 20th Century vintage British three draw spotting telescope. By and engraved to the first draw is”J H Steward Ltd Ltd London.” for the makers and ” Quick focus Marksman” for the model. As the name suggests it is designed for fast focus on subjects sych as stags in the field. The instrument is extended then the eye piece twists on a screw mechanism enabling a fast sharp image. Many of these fine telescopes are in use today as spotting scopes for rifle shooting or for deer stalking. The telescope optics return a clear, crisp image and have been dismantled, all lenses checked for damage and cleaned, all threads have been lubricated when re-assembled to ease future cleaning. The brass which still has its anti reflective browning still intact has been lightly cleaned and the leather has been cleaned and nourished. The leather caps and heavy hide lanyard strap to ease carriage are in excellent condition also.   Dimensions 13 1/2″(34.3cm) closed 31 1/2″(79.9cm) fully extended  James Henry Steward (18171896)  established J.H. Stewardin London in 1852. J.H Steward became incorporated as J.H. Steward Limited on on 1st Feb 1913. The business grew from a modest beginning: a stall selling pocket watches and assorted items at the annual competition days of The National Rifle Association (NRA). The NRA is the governing body for full bore rifle and pistol shooting sports in the UK. The Association was established in 1859 to improve the shooting skills of the newly formed corps of volunteers to meet the perceived threat of an invasion by the French. A J.H. Steward advert first appeared in the NRA programme of 1865. When of age, each of the founders four sons joined the business. So by the mid-1880s it was not only an expanding family business but had become a family dynasty as each son was given his own rented shop in London to run. But right up to the twilight years the shop on The Strand remained the business “head office” and the mainstay of the family empire. In 1928 plans to demolish 457, West Strand prompted that branch to relocate to the head office. Not long after the severe “Great Depression of the 1930s” meant that the Steward empire, like so many other businesses, had to “downsize”. After closing all the shops except 406, The Strand the company bought the freehold of the head office and continued operating from it for the next 40 years.
