This is a very old brass telescope found on the car boot.
The owners children had been playing with it and broken the front lens.
He was selling it before they did anything else, but I note they have also
done something to the mechanism that winds the eye piece in and out.
It feels like some teeth are missing to me.
He told me it is called a library telescope and dates from 1790, I don’t know if this true or not.
It comes in its original fitted mahogany case with the various parts shown.
The case is 30 1/2 inches long (775mm). 6 3/4 inches wide (173mm). 4 inches deep (100mm).
There is a makers label in the lid for a William Harris & Co London.
There is also a piece of card in the box written on both sides, see pics.
The main tube diameter is about 2 1/4 inches (57mm).
Apart from the obvious damage its does not seem in bad condition.
I’m guessing there are people out there in eBay land who can mend telescopes
and if it were mended I’m also guessing it would be quite valuable.
