This is a pair of 7×50 Stepnite binoculars produced by Ross London in the mid 1930s, serial number 111084. The Stepnite is a ‘Porro II’ design with prisms cemented together to increase light transmission. It was introduced in 1928 for British naval trials before being produced as a civilian model. The British Army No 5 7×50 binoculars were based on the Stepnite with the two binoculars differing in only minor details. These were standard issue throughout WWII. They have a 7 field of view.

The binoculars are in good cosmetic condition with just a little paint loss in places – see photos. The prism boxes and the barrels are sprayed with black ‘pebble’ paint, rather than being leather covered. This is more typical of binoculars for military use, but there is no evidence of a broad arrow mark, so I suspect they are an early civilian model.

The quality of the optics on the binoculars is excellent – some of the best I have seen for binoculars of this era. The lenses are in very clean condition and the prisms appear perfectly aligned. I suspect that they have been recently serviced. The central hinge is well damped and the eye piece focussing is smooth. Dimensions when fully opened are 20 x 18 x 6.5cm and the binoculars weigh 1050g.

They come with their original neck strap.
