RossLondon “Stepruva” 9 x 35 binoculars serial number 3050c.1954. Field of View: 7.8 deg = 135 yd/1,000 yd., weight withoutcase 645g. Dimensions:- length 120mm, width 175mm, height 60mm.Rosswas one of Britain’s great optical marques, the firm’s history goingback into the 19th century. The Stepruva, launched in 1932, was oneof the company’s most successful models, a compact, wide-angle glasscunningly designed to out-perform rivals’ 8 x 30 models both in termsof magnification and light-gathering capability. The binoculars forsale are of the early pattern Stepruva type with longerobjective tubes than the later versions. The low serial numberfollows the company starting a new run in 1954. Like all post WW2Ross glasses, they have full blue optical coatings.Build quality and optical performance are on a par with the bestclassic marques. And clearly these particular glasses have had onlyoccasional, careful use and so are still in fine condition. Opticsare still very clear. Reverse view and just some tiny black specks(probably paint flakes) are visible. Repeat the process against avery strong light (a tough test for any old glass) and a hint of hazeappears but nothing that affects normal viewing. Collimation isperfect and centre focus and right diopter are smooth with verylittle wear or backlash, really pleasant to use. Cosmetic conditionis very nice indeed with just a few traces of use.(The photos does not bring out a slight dent in the left rear prism housing, hardly noticeable.) The glasses havetheir original high quality English solid leather case, shoulderstrap and a black leather lanyard. In all, a great classic Englishglass in excellent overall condition.(TheStepruva also enjoyed a British royal connection when Camilla,Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince Charles was pictured in 2012on the front page of the Times with a pair of Ross Stepruva 9 x 35sat the Cheltemham races see photo.)Thebinoculars will be very carefully packed in a well padded box fordispatch and sent fully insured.
