Komz 6 x30 Russian military binoculars serial number 235170 (1952). Made inthe former-USSR by the Kazan Optical-MechanicalFactory in the Autonomous Republic ofTatars. Komz was set up shortly after the 1941 German invasion of theSoviet Union as part of the plan to move key industries East of theUrals. Over the years the plant has gained a very high reputation fortheir optical products and currently it produces the Russian Army standard 7 x 30 binocular, a really excellent glass.Thebinoculars for sale appear to have had a chequered history. There isno doubt that they started life in 1952, the last full year ofStalin’s rule, as the then standard Red Army 6 x 30 military glass. This design dated from the 1930’s and was used throughout WW2. Postwar, it was quickly replaced by a 8 x 30 in fact 6 x 30’s thislate are quite rare. But probably during the 1960’s modern coatedoptics were fitted. My close up lens photo shows the deep purplecoatings found on Russian glasses from the late 1960’s onward. Theseresemble (but probably are not) the  Zeiss DDR T3Mmulti-coatings. These coatings are on both objectives and botheyepieces. The case is what I believe to be a 1960’s Russianhome-market fibreboard civilian type all export cases wereleather. Possibly some ex-military glasses were supplied to partyofficials, engineers, heads of collective farms etc.?As tocondition, despite obvious abuse, the optics are still excellent,Russian binoculars being designed to withstand extremes of climateand rough usage. Optics are still extremely clear, the only damagebeing a scratch dead centre on the left objective lens, invisible innormal use. Please see my through lenses photos ignore photolights and surface dust on the left lens. The glasses view reallywell, the usual top-quality super-sharp Komz optics boosted by thelater coatings, collimation still perfect. Dimensions:- length120mm, width 155mm, height 50mm. These are heavy glasses, lots ofbrass in their construction, weight 680g. So an interesting exampleof this Russian military classicThebinoculars will be very carefully packed in a well padded box fordispatch and sent fully insured.
