Zeiss D.F. 7×50 Artl. Kriegsmarine Gas Maskbinoculars with faint Eagle markingsThese Zeiss D.F. 7×50 binoculars are in well usedoriginal condition. They came from the belongings of a deceased veteran whotold his family that he had acquired these along with other items as spoilsof war during WW2. He had removed what he considered to be the offending eaglesymbol and painted the entire binoculars in thick matt black paint to disguisethe binoculars of their true origin. This paint has now been removed back tothe original surfaces and unfortunately reveals that his attempt to remove theeagle was quite drastic. However, this is part of the binoculars history so theobliterated inscription has been left as it is. Parts of the inscription arestill just visible, these include the top left hand wing of the eagle, part ofthe circle at the bottom, the letter M, and some characters on the right.Luckily the Carl Zeiss Jenainscription and the serial number 2071866remain undamaged. The other cover plate retains the undamaged Artl. Nr. 7970 inscription. Most of theoriginal black paint remains although it is worn away on the edges. Theoriginal eye cup rubbers had been cut off so very authentic lookingreplacements have been fitted. These slide up and down freely, one slightlystiffer than the other. Both oculars turn and focus freely and smoothly. Thelenses and prisms are not perfect but they are very acceptable and allow clearviewing. The objective lenses have a few snowflakes but as mentioned, thesedo not unduly affect normal viewing. There are no chips or deep scratches toeither the prisms or the lenses. There is a reticule in the right hand ocular. One photograph taken through the lens shows how clear they. The poor focusing on the subject is the camera focus and not the binoculars.So, these are a good honest pair of original gasmask binoculars with the Artl. inscription,  the Kriegsmarine M,  and what is left of the eagle. The rathercrude removal of the eagle inscription is unfortunate, although completelyunderstandable, but it adds to the history that many military items underwent during the conflict.
