This superb German Army Bakelite binoculars case was brought back by a British officer and is fully marked having the maker’s code “GMG” and numerical code “24” present inside the bottom ( Gebrder Merten, Gummersbach). This is a rare maker for bakelite cases – indeed the only one I’ve ever seen in many years of collecting. The 2 letter code dates it to 1939 or early 1940 (see notes below) Unusually, the case itself is in great condition. The outer leather straps have long gone but the inner leather padding is present and the spring closing catch is still firm and smooth in use. I have not cleaned the case only wiped. The inside base to show the makers marks.Decent Bakelite cases are becoming harder to find now. This classic German Army case, rarely found in such fine condition, will complement your favourite Dienstglas admirably… From the internet; In December 1938 the “MP” devised the common logo, around which information on the maker of the item (2 letters), as well as the chemical composition of the bakelite could easily be displayed.
