FAMOUS AS THE PROPRIETER OF THE ‘MIRROR GROUP NEWSPAPERS’ AND THE ‘DAILY MIRROR’ NEWSPAPER.WHAT IS NOT SO WELL KNOWN IS MR MAXWELLS NOTEABLE MILITARY SERVICE FOR THE U.K. IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR. THESE BINOCULARS (OR FIELD GLASSES) WERE OWNED AND USED BY HIM. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ A FEW DETAILS ABOUT THIS MANS WARTIME SERVICE.THE LEATHER CASE APPROX 22.5 CM’S HIGH AND 19.5 CM’S AT ITS WIDEST. THE CASE MAS THE INITIALS ‘R.M.’ IN GOLD AND ON THE INSIDE LID IS THE BADGE OF THE ‘NORTH STAFFORD’ REGIMENT.THE BINOCULARS ARE APPROX 20 CM’S HIGH (LENSES SCREWED DOWN) AND 17.5 CM’S AT THEIR WIDEST. THEY ARE COATED IN BLACK (SOME PARTS LACKING AND WORN). THEY ARE MARKED TO THE TOP ‘BINO PRISM No 5’ ‘MK11X7’ ‘REGd No 22063’ ‘GRATIOULES’ ‘1.5% APART AND 1.4% 1/2% AND 1% HIGH’ A LARGE ‘R’ IN A LOZENGE SHAPE AND ‘1940’ ALSO WITH TWO MILITARY ‘ARROW’ MARKS.ON THE CENTRE TUBE PART IT IS ENGRAVED: ‘CPT R. MAXWELL. M.O.ROBERT MAXWELL WAS PROPRIETOR OF THE ‘MIRROR GROUP NEWSPAPERS’ AND WAS ALSO FAMOUS FOR HIS MILITARY SERVICE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.HE JOINED THE BRITISH ARMY AS A PRIVATE AND LANDED IN THE NORMANDY BEACHES AND FOUGHT THROUGH TO BERLIN (BY THAT TIME HE WAS A SEARGENT).HIS INTELIGENCE AND GIFT FOR LANGUAGES GAINED HIM A COMMISION, (CAPTAIN) AND IN JANUARY 1945 HE RECIEVED THE MILITARY CROSS IN WHICH YEAR HE SHOT AND KILLED THE MAYOR OF A GERMAN TOWN THAT HIS UNIT WERE TRYING TO CAPTURE.ORIGINALLY CALLED JAN LUDVIK HOCH HE WAS A REFUGEE TO ENGLAND FROM CHECKOSLOVAKIA. HE CAME FROM A POOR FAMILY AND MADE HIS FORTUNE MAINLY FROM HIS NEWSPAPER EMPIRE.
