A vintage Carl Zeiss ‘Telex’ 6×24 binocular, for G. Spiteri Debono, Valletta, Malta, plus neck strap.
This binocular was made by Carl Zeiss between 1912 and 1940 and this particular one was sold by a Maltese firm of opticians called G. Spiteri Debono who still operate in the town of Valletta. Their name is inscribed on the rear ‘hinge’ adjacent to the degree measurements (see photo 5).
This is a 6×24 binocular from the ‘Telex’ range and is of the type where focusing is carried out by rotating both eyepieces to achieve a clear focus for each eye, rather than just rotating a central focusing wheel as was the custom on later binoculars.
To give some idea of size, they measure approximately 4 1/8″ (10.5cm) from top to bottom (front to back lens) as shown in the first photo.
It is in good working condition with no major damage, just some small dents and dinks to the body and some rubbing away of the black coating in places. The photos tend to show most of these. The lenses are in excellent condition and it comes with its original brown leather neck strap.
