Vintage BARR & STROUD CF31 Binoculars 7x Serial Number 123729
Ref: COI am offering for auction a pair of BARR&STROUD CF31 7×50 Binoculars. They carry the serial number 123729, which dates them to the late 1950’s.
Whilst Barr & Stroud Binoculars were typically issued to the military, these do not carry military markings and therefore were most likely civilian owned. Imaging quality lends itself very well to Marine use, which is why they were usually issued to the Navy. The CF31 model is quite rare and not often found for sale on eBay.
The binoculars are mechanically and structurally complete and fully functional with no dents or cracks, so for their age they are in good condition. They have obviously been used, but apart from some paint loss and superficial oxidisation, mainly to the outer edges (see photos) cosmetic condition is pretty good. The textured grip coatings are in excellent condition.
They have central wheel and right eyepiece focusing; the wheel rotates fully in both directions, as does the right eyepiece lens. Focusing works very well, but both adjustments are a little stiff, where the grease has become stiff with age. Once cleaned and regreased these controls will be returned to pretty much new condition.
They provide a very clear bright/crisp image, however there are a few specks internally, so would benefit from being cleaned. Whilst one of the prisms is blistered or chipped, as far as I can tell this is having very little, if any, effect on image quality. There are one or two minute blemishes in the objective lenses, possibly due to separation, but they are so small, it is difficult to tell for sure. As these issues have no impact on image quality, they are only mentioned for the sake of complete accuracy.Externally the lenses are in good condition with no major scratches. They come with their original leather neckstrap, which appears to be in good condition, but please bear in mind it is nearly sixty years old, so I cannot vouch for it’s strength.
Whilst there is no case, the binocular will be very well packed to ensure safe shipping.As condition is not absolutely perfect, I am listing this item with a low start price and no reserve.
