Rare opportunity to own these very unusual collapsible concertina binoculars.These binoculars are by James Aitchinson who took out a patent on 20th. January 1891 to protect his idea, (patent number 1016) ,he then took a partner Thomas Bradley and they began to manufacture them in London.Unlike modern binoculars which use prisms these binoculars produce upright images using a pair of Galilean telescopes with large convex front lenses and concave ones for the eyepieces.They sold well,many army officers used them during the “Boer War-1899-1902” and the “First World War 1914 -18”,they were also used as opera/theatre glasses.These binoculars are a rare survivor,they have a leather case which may well be the original,they are in very good condition.The binoculars measure just 30mm when folded flat,extended they are 130mm x 110mm wide x 50mm deep at the objective end,they are extremely light weighing just 151grams (5.4 ounces)
