The SWIFT AUDUBON 8.5
x 44 PORROPRISM binocular is a CLASSIC instrument. If you already know about
them please skip this paragraph! Primarily aimed at birdwatchers, they soon
became accepted as the best performing Japanese binocular, with optical ability
right up there with the likes of zeiss and leica. The Audubon 8.5 x 44 has gone
through many minor changes over the years, but has always kept to its trademark
extra wide field of view, very tough body, and optics which deliver amazingly
large bright pin-sharp images. Despite SWIFT labelling some versions
‘featherweight’,
audubons are no lightweights, they are a good kilo around your neck!

This listing is for a
good example of the sought after `GOLD STRIPE` AUDUBON. This example dates from
1981 and performs really well, this morning I`ve tested it watching swallows
and house martins from my garden and it has delivered some great images. All
the glass appears to be in lovely condition considering its age and previous
use. The brown leather neckstrap that SWIFT supplied with audubons from this
era was very worn and twisted on this example, so I have removed it and will
supply an excellent American OPTECH wide neoprene neck strap with quick release
buckles. AUDUBONS are not light binoculars, and this sensible upgrade will help
with long time use in the field. The case is the later type with gold coloured
fittings and is in very good fully intact condition (the lids sometimes detach
on this later case), it is complete with case straps and a new microfiber lens
cloth is also supplied. There are no lens caps.

There
are some defects commensurate with its age and use: the main hinge could
ideally be a little tighter; there are a few small chips/marks on the body and
there is a missing small piece of body covering on the base; some minor paint
loss on the focusing wheel and the objective trim rings.

i take
great care examining, using and describing the binoculars i sell, and always
get a second opinion. however, i am not a professional and my description is
based on my experience and honest assessment; most examples i sell are at least
35 years old and there may be other defects…….also, please remember,
everyone`s eyes are different…..
