Swift Audubon 8.5 x 44 ‘gold ribbon’ binoculars in excellent condition inside and out.
There are some light signs of wear, but the good state of the edges and focus wheel, suggest they have not really had much use. The optics are crystal clear, with no signs of fungus, fogging or dust. The lens coatings are all perfect and look like new. There is a small tear to one of the original rubber eye cups, but no perishing. The hinges are a bit uneven but still firm. Focusing is smooth and easy with no dryness or grittiness. The dioptre adjustment is firm and smooth. The case has little sign of wear but the top has come unstuck and the bottom is missing! looks like glue failure. Still has the original front lens caps.
The only issue is the eye-piece assembly retaining screw. It looks to me like a metal shelving bolt. It does unscrew, but it’s a tight enough fit to stay where it’s put when fully wound in, and not come loose during use. Workman-like
but very effective! A good example of ‘battlefield repair’! What happened to the original?
I would say they have been kept in the case and stored in a warm dry place for many years, to still be in this good condition.
