CARL ZEISS JENA JENOPTEM 8x30W PRISMATIC BINOCULARS c1974Gin clear lenses with leather case Serial No. 4159076These are a superb pair of Carl Zeiss Jena Jenoptem 8x30W prismatic binoculars with stunningly clear optics that were made in the DDR as marked on the rear hinge. (Jena fell into East Germany after the conclusion of WWII hence the DDR marking on the hinge). I suspect the W stands for wide angle.The serial number of 4159076 is marked on the front of the central tube and dates them as 1974. Both lenses are immaculately clear and give the sort of image you would always expect from a pair of Zeiss binoculars. They are, without doubt, a very fine pair and stand approx. 4 (10cm) high and are 6 (15cm) wide at a normal width setting weighing a very manageable 544 grams.They are in great operational condition with a little wear to the black enamel edges and centre tube when they have been taken in and out of its case. – you will never see a cleaner or clearer pair of lenses. The excellent black leather covering of the barrels is exquisite while the bakelite eye-pieces are both in perfect condition with no cracks.Focussing is achieved by an easy to rotate central wheel with the right lens initially focussed independently by rotating the rear lens – this is to take account of the different strength of the users’ eyes. On the rear of the left hand prism it has the Carl Zeiss Jena Logo in a split geometric figure. On the rear of the right hand prism, also in a split geometric figure, it statesJENOPTEM 8x30W.It has a black leather neck strap that attaches to the two lugs on the rear/underside of the lenses. It also has a rear lens cover that will cover both lenses and is attached to the neck strap. Saves losing two rear lens caps!!Most importantly, of course, is what you see when you look through them with these lenses giving a truly sharp, bright and clear image – certainly as fine as anything I have ever seen. In order to try and prove this point I have taken some photos through both lenses with which I am quite pleased. I hope my eyes focus the same as yours and don’t appear soft!They come with their brown leather carrying case which is stitch perfect. As they are relatively small and light, they are an ideal pair, of very high quality binoculars, to take to the races or bird watching.
