This is a stunning and very rare early antique pair of triple function binoculars marked by the maker, John Simons Marratt, an optician of 63 King William Street, London Bridge. As the name of his company changed from “J S Marratt” to “Marratt & Short” in 1860 this pair of binoculars must pre-date that change. They are designed with triple optical functions achieved by rotating three different pairs of eye lenses for “Marine”, “Field” or “Theatre” use. I don’t think I have ever had such an old pair of binoculars in such fabulous condition, hardly a mark and working beautifully. The case has not fared so well over the years and, although it is still functional, has had some repairs to the hinge and the closing strap, and the lid mounted handle has disappeared. The object lens size of 2.25 inches visible diameter and the fewer number of lens interfaces and consequent light loss compared to a later prismatic design results in a very pleasing and impressive performance particularly under poor lighting conditions. Focusing is smooth and positive and all three optical modes function exactly as they should. The case measures 6.75 x 6 x 3.5 inches overall.
