This was my first telescope, but my astronomy interest has moved on to bigger and better.

It is a classic 4″ refractor, focal length 1000mm so f/9.8, on a manually controlled equatorial mount.

The original eyepieces at 10mm and 25mm are included, as is the 2″ to 1.25″ eyepiece adapter, 90 diagonal and 6×30 finder scope.  There is an instruction manual and a user guide.

I have used the mount with a polar scope and electric motors to track the stars but these are not included in the sale, so I have reassembled the mount to its original specification.

After four years it is showing signs of wear and tear, of course, but these are cosmetic and do not affect the function of the mount or the telescope.  The equatorial mount has been well maintained and adjusted, and runs smoothly with the twist handles.  The scope itself is clean and the optics are in fine condition.

What do you need to know?  

1.  One of the leg clamps on the tripod has sheared.  Because of its design, this is a common failing.  My solution was to wrap it round with a giant jubilee clip, which has made it stronger than the original.

2.  The polar scope lid, which points downwards, is a loose push-fit and falls off.  I have padded it with felt pads so that it needs a firmer push to put it on and a firm pull to get it off.  Better than the original, I think .

3.  One of the triangular tray bolts is missing, and I have substituted a replacement which is not quite the same as the original.

4.  The telescope mount bar has the usual marks where it has been attached and detached many times, as do the weights.

This telescope and mount are still available from various retailers in the UK, priced from 300 upwards.

I’ve added lots of photos, including one of the Moon taken with a Nikon DSLR in place of the eyepiece.

For anyone starting in astronomy, I would thoroughly recommend this telescope.  Without a computerised GOTO system, you will have to learn your way around the night sky!  I have had tremendous fun learning astronomy and you can see some of my results at www.simoninthelakes.co.uk

There are no packing boxes, so this will have to be collection only.  I travel by car quite regularly from Junction 36 of the M6 (Cumbria) to Junction 11 of the M1 (Luton) so I’d be happy to arrange to meet somewhere within reasonable distance of that corridor.
