Rare sprung multi-draw silver plated opera glasses orbinoculars 1874 patentThis model of opera glass is quite rare and evenmore so in perfect original working condition as these are. The only other pairI have owned were simply inscribed Patent1874 whereas this pair are inscribed BreveteS.G.D.G. (French for Patent and ‘Sans Garantie du Gouvernement’ meaningwithout Government guarantee).  Solinking the two examples along with information from the examples in theCollege of Optometrists museum, it would suggest these were made in France around1874.As mentioned this pair is in very good condition.They are a very complex design having over 45 parts including separate springsin each of the barrels. This pair has been fully dismantled, cleaned, andpolished and now functions perfectly. They are held in the closed position by asprung clasp which has a push-button for release. Once released the springsextend the four draws. Focusing is achieved using the wheel above the secondbridge to extend the 5th draw as desired. The sprung draws workperfectly as does the clasp. The only very minor issue would be that the focuscan crab very slightly making focusing a little sticky at times. The lensesare clean and viewing is good. There is a very small scratched area on oneobjective lens where the glasses have been put down but once again this is veryminor considering their 150 years of age. The silver plating is in excellentcondition with no rubbing at all. All the mother of pearl on the barrels isalso very good.With the sprung draws released and the focusingfully extended the glasses measure 98mm. With the focusing retracted theymeasure 78mm. With the sprung draws compressed and clipped into place theglasses measure just 41mm. They are 112mm wide.
