For sale; my old pair of Praktica Sport 7-21 x 25 Zoom binoculars, offered for spares or repair. They are actually functional; they focus and zoom reliably, and the optics are still pretty clear (see last photos). However, the ‘grip coating’ on the outer surface of the binoculars has deteriorated to the point where it has turned into a sticky mess (see photo of my fingers for evidence!). It’s probably due to plasticiser failure, if we’re going to get technical about it; anyone with experience of 1980s Olympus camera cases will know what I mean….I don’t think the ‘sticky’ can be cleaned off with a solvent. The best bet is probably a mild abrasive; I removed some of the grip coating from the underside using a bit of toothpaste on a cloth. However, I can’t really be bothered to do the whole job; I have a pocket-sized pair of Minolta 8×21 binoculars these days, so probably wouldn’t use the Prakticas much even if they weren’t sticky. As I said, the optics are still quite clean inside. A bit of the stickiness migrated to the eyepieces, which I’ve wiped off as best I could (without using toothpaste!). The collimation of the binoculars seems OK at 7x magnification, but goes somewhat ‘adrift’ towards the higher magnifications. I’d test them further, but I’m sick of touching the things…. if you need any more details, please ask, and I’ll answer grudgingly, then go and wash my hands again. The case is sound, but has also got a bit sticky; I’ll wrap the binoculars separately in a polythene bag for posting.
