This is an old pair of Naval binoculars made by Nippon Kogaku of Japan before they became better known as Nikon.
The serial number of the bins indicate that they were made in 1949 or 1950.Marked with a simple ‘Made in Japan’ engraving rather than the earlier ‘Made in US Occupied Japan’, the bins are the same spec as the earlier type. I’ve been using these for a number of years and they are the best I’ve ever used. They’re just too heavy to carry about these days.
Condition. Well used with some salt-spray damage. The body and paintwork is worn and the vulcanite covering on the prisms is flaky – see photos.
Optics are sharp and are collimated perfectly. However there is some fungus in the prisms. I’ve tried to get inside to clean them but the grease on the objective lens screw is too hard for me. The fungus has been there for all the time I’ve had them and hasn’t got any worse. It doesn’t affect the vision at all.
They are a collector item and are great to use. Priced to sell and post free.
