High quality vintage Nippon Kogaku Telescope in good condition

Please study photographs carefully to help assess condition.

This is a very rare telescope which rarely come up for sale. It is the only one I have ever seen.

I have tried to research it online but there is very little information available. I believe  62mm and 100mm versions were also made, but the little 50mm telescope seems to be the rarest.

It is not complete, the finderscope is missing as is one of the eyepieces. More importantly the tripod and mount is missing although the counterweight is present. The sun projection screen is present. As a testament to the quality of this instrument, the screens are mounted on brass or bronze pins in the box.

The focuser is smooth and precise and the extension tubes appear to be turned from stainless steel. Overall for its size, it is a heavy instrument of high quality construction.

The lens can be adjusted for collimation and the tube interior is extremely well baffled and “blackened”

The optical tube and dew shield bear scratches to the paintwork and it looks like someone has stuck sellotape on the tube at sometime. I haven’t tried to clean the telescope at all. One of the screws holding on the dew shield is a little loose.

The lens, when looking directly through is clear and bright, free from damage and haze. when looking at an angle in direct sun there appears to be spidery artefacts on the object lens. I cannot tell whether it is fungus or watermarks. I have lenses with fungus on them and these appear more “solid” than on this telescope. There is no etching to the glass that I have seen on other lenses with fungus. To me it looks like very faint watermarks but I can’t be sure. Please check the photos as I have tried to photograph them. These are invisible in use and do not have any detrimental effects when in use. I only noticed these marks when I came to photograph the telescope. 

I have put the telescope to use and it performs superbly.

There are 3 eyepieces, Huygens 25mm, Huygens 18mm and Orthoscopic 9mm. The 25mm looks clean apart from dust. The 18mm and 9mm have what looks like watermarks and would obviously benefit from cleaning. I have used these eyepieces and they perform well.

The box is battle scarred but solid.
