Nippon Kogaku (Nikon) Imperial Japanese Navy Monocular Gunnery Sight from approx. 1920’s-30’s. Overall length 62cm, maximum diameter 14cm. 20x magnification. Serial number 20, which relates to the specific type of equipment – this item likely being the 20th type produced of this type and model. The main housing appears to consist of a brass tube andbrass or bronze casting resulting in a very heavy item.  The scope would have been secured to a gunnerydirector or similar equipment via precision clamps around the main barrel,hence the parallel main tube unlike Japanese naval binoculars of the time. The sight is in un-restored working order but the optics wouldbenefit from cleaning. The cross-hair is intact and can be illuminated througha lamp port.  The latter has suffered a small amount of distortion from aprevious impact.  There is also a cappresent at the objective lens end of the scope.  The scope is fitted with two caps tofacilitate drying air to be passed through the optics, the caps of which haveJapanese inscriptions that still contain the original white engraving paint orwax.At some point the black paint has been re-done and some ofthis has been removed to allow the markings to be read.This is an important early piece with regard to the Japaneseoptics industry and Japanese Naval history. This item dates from a period whenmost Japanese ships and gunnery equipment were sourced from Europe. Followingthe outbreak of World War 1 supplies of German optical equipment becameunavailable and sparked the construction of the fledgling Japanese opticalindustry. This piece bears the anchor make of the Imperial JapaneseNavy and also the earliest symbol used as a trade mark by Nippon Kogaku acompany today known as Nikon. We have contacted the archives at Nikon who confirmed thatthe inscription No 20 is the serial number and the logo present corresponds tothe dates listed; however very little information exists from this period andthe Company were unable to supply any further information.

There are two links here to Wikipedia which give basic information regarding the type of system in which this may have been used.One of the pictures shows a similar item at a meeting ofJapanese enthusiast group, this is the only other example we have been able toidentify of this type and it appears to be less complete than the item for salehere. The foliage viewed through the scope was photographedthrough two panes of glass at approximately 100 metres.This item is very heavy and requires handing with greatcare.
