This is a new 3 inch aperture Newtonian reflector on a Dobsonian mounting.
I have been an astronomer for the past 38 years and have written articles for the Sky at Night and Astronomy magazines plus I am the author of Observing the deep sky : an astronomers companion plus also have written chapters in other publications such as Norton’s sky atlas and reference handbook. I was also the deep sky director for the Society for Popular Astronomy for about 18 years.
I have  been popularising amateur astronomy for years and have this neat little telescope brand new which would make a wonderful introduction to the world of astronomy but to make it a better deal I am including some other bits to enhance the package.
The telescope is designed to be what is called a rich field instrument meaning it is of a short focus giving lower magnifications and thus wider and more aesthetically pleasing views plus because  the Dobsonian mounting design is  not motorised, you push and pull manually to re centre the object you are observing…much more difficult at high powers.
The scope comes with  two eyepieces and a 2x barlow lens but these eyepieces are a very simple design which give a narrow field of view plus the optics will not be great…you can have the best mirror or lens  in a telescope but if you use a poor eyepiece then you will get poor quality images. The eyepieces with the scope are  20mm and 4mm oculars which give magnifications of 17.5x with the 20mm and 87.5x with the 4mm. The barlow lens will double these magnifications.
What I have done is to supply alongside the original eyepieces  two proper astronomical eyepieces, these will give far superior views  and wider fields than the supplied ones as the  optical design is different, much better coatings  and  better eye relief. These two eyepieces are a 25mm giving a magnification of 14x and a 10 mm giving a magnification of 35x…much better suited for this telescope. The  better eyepieces are in photo 8.
You are supposed to get a moon filter with the scope but there was not one included so I assume they have changed the specs and  kept the  original info on the box but to compensate for this I have supplied a much better quality filter to replace it. A moon filter is simply a piece of coloured ( grey, blue or green) glass in a small 1.25 inch cell that screws into an eyepiece so if you look at the moon and it is a  bit bright then this filter simply blocks a bit of light out but no one really uses  moon filters anymore, the  one I have supplied is green (yes it will make the moon look like it IS made out of cheese).
Finally I am including a copy of my book about the deep sky to help  you take your first steps into the wonderful world of stargazing..the book is for the beginner and those who are just stepping up onto the next rung from the beginner stages. I can sign the book  if needed ;)
The other items in the kit are a planisphere, instruction book and computer software so you can have view the  heavens on your PC.
