Leica Trinovid 8 x 32B binoculars serial number 839282. True classic binoculars from one Germany’s greatest manufacturers, Ernst Leitz GmbH, Wetzlar. When launched in 1957, the revolutionary Trinovid set a new benchmark for uncompromising quality, the compact roof-prism form often copied but never bettered since. The ultimate accolade came in 1969 when the US space agency NASA selected a modified pair of Leica Trinovid binoculars for the  the successful Apollo 11 lunar exploration mission.
This particular example is still in close to new condition. The binoculars were purchased new in Hamburg, Germany in the 1980’s by a British tourist from whom I later bought them. Included in the sale is the literature provided by the dealer a part of that sale. I have also included the catalogue page for this model in the pictures for reference. After the holiday, it appears that the binoculars were put away and seldom if ever used again, they still look like brand new to-day. Leather and paint are unmarked and pristine, the dual wheel focusing beautifully smooth. Lenses are unmarked and collimation still perfect. The the binoculars feature fold-down rubber eyecups making them also suitable for spectacle wearers and are generally a joy to use producing a bright, pin-sharp image, well up to the legendary Leica standard.
But there is one minor optical issue, not actually having  any  effect on viewing but important to point out. Look at the photos and there is one showing a stain on a prism just behind the left front objective lens. It may be a of grease or cement, hard to tell. But it leaves the main optical path clear and is totally unnoticeable in normal use – and it could easily be cleaned off by an optical technician. Other than that, optics are crystal-clear and collimation perfect.
The binoculars still have their high quality leather case with grey velvet lining and their lanyard, unused, still in its box. With the sale come two Leica leaflets and a 20 page brochure describing the full Trinovid range as at that time. A great classic binocular in top original condition.
The binoculars will be carefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fully insured. I never end auctions early so there is no “buy-it-now” price. Note -payment or email required from the winning bidder withn 24 hours of auction’s end.
