HUGE CALIBRATED J. LIZARS BELFAST 5 DRAW MARINE TELESCOPE c. 1910 Makers’ marks (to the second draw):J. LIZARS / GLASGOW. EDINBURGH. Etc.John Lizars (1810-1879), an optician, founded the J. Lizars Company in Glasgow in 1830.It produced a wide range of high quality optical instruments ranging from eyeglasses to microscopes, telescopes and, later, cameras. After John Lizars died, the company continued to flourish and had opened branch offices in Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh,Greenock, Liverpool and Paisley before 1914 and the beginning of the First World War.In later years, it was to merge with C. Jeffrey Black and form the optical retail chain of Black & Lizars.Well before the First World War J. Lizars of Glasgow and Belfast were producing a range of high quality telescopes. It was logical that in areas of ship-building activity, there would be a considerable demand for marine telescopes. In its Special Optical Catalogue (1906) the company devoted a special section to its telescopes, suggesting that some might be suitable for exploring expeditions or for technical institutes and colleges. It claimed that even its smallest lenses could ‘show the time on a church clock three miles distant’. The instruments they produced were well-engineered and of exceptionally high optical quality. A distinctive feature of the Lizars telescopes was the company’s practice of stove-enamelling the brass tubes – a technique later copied by one or two other makers.DESCRIPTION:Brass draw tube construction. All tubes are black stove-enamelled providing resistance to corrosion in a marine environment.Calibrated First Draw. Magnification Settings from 30x to 46x in steps of 2Compound 2″ Achromatic Objective Lens.Sliding 3″ sun-shade on a black section ensuring no reflection when it is deployed.Solidly constructed, well engineered, pre- WW1 Marine TELESCOPE in superb condition and excellent working order.Black stove-enamelled brass draw tubes for total resistance to corrosion in a marine environment.Nickel Plate for Owner’s Name on black leather-clad barrel (Not engraved; it has been left plain)Black leather-clad to Barrel and Sun-shadeTwo leather screw-mounted straps for inserting a carrying strap are located on the main barrel. They are firmly attached. All tubes are free from splits and move smoothly when retracted or extended. All threads are precise and can be easily released for lens cleaning purposes as requiredThe First and Second Draws contain the 4 lenses of the Schryll-Huygens configuration. The black-coated threaded eye-piece has a rotational dust cover. When unscrewed and removed it provides access to a 1.75″ cartridge holding Lenses 1 & 2 each threaded separately to enable removal for cleaning. When the 2nd Draw is released from the 3rd Draw, a 2″ brass cartridge containing Lenses 3 & 4 of the Schryle-Huygens configuration can be released and removed. Both lenses have individual threaded mounts and can be removed for cleaning. The brass cartridge has a brass stabilising mount to prevent any excessive movement when it is inserted into the tube. All 4 lenses in the First and Second Draws are present, intact and clear. The Bonded Achromatic Objective or Field Lens has clearly never been disassembled. It too is in perfect conditionCONDITION:This is a huge and very powerful telescope which can be used over very long distances with extraordinary accuracy.Superb overall with excellent focusing and adjustment. Images are of excellent quality as one would expect from such a prestigious maker. The black leather cladding to the main barrel is in excellent and well-polished condition. All lenses are present and intact with no damage whatsoever. FAULTS:There is no carrying case or strap. On the main barrel, slight separation of the stitching to the leather cladding is observable. It is really very minor but is mentioned for the sake of accuracy.DIMENSIONS:Fully retracted: 12.25″ / 31cmFully extended: 39.75″ / 101cmFully extended (including the sunshade for the field lens) : 41.5″ / 105 cmSun-shield only: 3.25″ / 8.2cm WEIGHT: 1.405 kg / 49.6 ozSUMMARY:An absolutely outstanding example of a pre WW1 marine telescope by this distinguished maker. It is in excellent working order, in good original condition, and would admirably compliment any period telescope collection. Please see my other listings for other WWI and WWII telescopes and earlier Georgian and Victorian telescopes. It will be well packed and insulated to our usual high standards for fully insured delivery by Royal Mail Next Day Special Delivery within the UK or by Global Express for delivery outside the UK.Only actual postal costs will be charged.
