Ingenious folding tube opera glasses The FrodshamPatent c1880This is an extremely clever design where the closedcylinders can be pulled apart then folded together to form the opera glassshape. The focus wheel is used asnormal. A very quick and easytransformation from a simple protected tube into fully functional opera glassesor binoculars. This folding design isknown as the Frodsham Patent. The glasses have no manufacturers identificationalthough the end of the focus wheel is marked with the French mark Bte SGDG roughly translating toPatented without government guarantee. Considering their age, the glasses are in fair original condition. The tubes carry the original leathercovering. The internal chrome parts are unmarked and untarnished. The externalchrome is very slightly rubbed showing a little brass underneath. Although theocular lenses are clean and clear and the focusing is smooth, the objectivelenses have early signs of delamination. This results in the viewed image beingslightly blurred with a yellow appearance. The glasses measure 112mm overall when closed andare 35mm diameter.
