Ingenious folding tube opera glasses or binoculars The Frodsham Patent c1880These ingenious design folding opera glasses are in reasonably good original condition. They also have their rare original tubular leather case. This is an extremely clever design where the closed cylinders can be pulled apart then folded together to form the opera glass shape. The focus wheel is used as normal. A very quick and easy transformation from a simple protected tube into fully functional opera glasses or binoculars. This folding design is known as the Frodsham Patent and dates to around 1880. These are the more expensive model with chrome parts rather than painted.The glasses have no manufacturers identification although they would normally have a small chrome cap at the end of the focus wheel marked with the French marks Bte SGDG roughly translating to Patented without government guarantee which was a typical identification used around this period. This chrome cap is missing on this pair but this does not affect their functionality. Considering their age, the glasses are in good original condition. The tubes carry the original leather covering. The chrome parts are unmarked and untarnished. One objective lens has some marks which look worse than it really is because it does not affect normal viewing very much. The focusing is smooth.The glasses measure 114mm overall when closed and are 34mm diameter.
