An excellent, antique lacquered 2.5 inch brass telescope, signed on the barrel ‘T. Cooke & Sons York’ complete with case and accessories.
The instrument retains most of the original lacquer with only minimmal spotting and grazes- it has a fully functional rack and pinion and fine twin telescopic stabilizers with universal joints to the telescope and the tripod. Substantial original, rigid mahogany tripod with good folding cross stretchers – even has brass tips on the feet.
Terrestial eyepiece and four astronomical eyepieces give very crisp high contrast viewing through the (adjustable) 2.5 inch object lens. Sun-shade & cap included.
Height to top of tripod support approximately 5 feet.
Strong original box with all interior fittings present – it appears to be fitted for only 2 astronomical eyepieces but 4 are present.
During the second half of the 19th Century Thomas Cooke became the leading maker of telescopes and supplied Observatories throughout the world. Many of his instruments have passed through my hands during the last 40+ years and I believe the quality of the optics and engineering is unsurpassed during the 19th Century.
