DESCRIPTION

A delightful,  Edwardian Gentleman’s 3 Draw Birdwatching /Stalking / Spotting Pocket Telescope dating from the leisured pre- First World War years and presented in original and unrestored condition.  All lenses are intact and clear. It focuses superbly.  All the brass draw tubes move smoothly and there is absolutely no damage. This is a good quality telescope by makers later known as “Enbeeco”. The “Made in England” mark suggests a manufacturing date after 1900 but it could well be very late Victorian.
Schryle-Huygens Four Lens Configuration housed within the First Draw.

When the eyepiece  is unscrewed, it provides access to a removable 1″ brass cartridge housing Lenses 1 & 2, each removable for cleaning. When the 1st Draw is uncoupled from the 2nd Draw, a second 1″ cartridge containing Lenses 3 and 4 is accessible in the First Draw. Lens 3 appears to be in a fixed position in the cartridge with a reducing insert fitted behind it.  It is probably threaded in to the cartridge but shows no sign of ever having been removed. It is intact and clear. Lens 4  is in its own threaded mount and therefore easily removable for cleaning.
Between the 2nd and 3rd Draws there is a further conventional threaded coupling but between the 3rd Draw and the main barrel, the tube is not retained- that is to say it can be completely removed from the barrel if required – as was often the case in much earlier telescopes, particularly marine ones. The main barrel is covered in sone kind of black bonded leatherette or possibly lacquered coating which is in excellent condition. It houses the Objective achromatic lens in a threaded mount. Both component lenses are intact and show no signs of edge chipping or cracking. They have clearly never been separated for maintenance. There is a built-in sunshade about 0.5″ deep. There is also a brass push-on cover for the objective lens housing. The Objective lens has a diameter of approximately 1 and 1/8″ which is quite large for a pocket telescope of the period

CONDITION :

Excellent condition in full working order. All the lenses are present and clear. The optics are excellent. The tubes show no distortion and move easily. All sections and lenses (except Lens no.3 above)  can be easily disassembled for cleaning and maintenance. Focusing is very precise. The “leather” work is all intact.

FAULTS:

There is a slight indentation to the milled outer edge of the eyepiece. It does not in any way affect the thread of the eyepiece or the functioning of the telescope but is mentioned for the sake of accuracy. It will be clearly visible on one at least one of the scans.
DIMENSIONS:
Fully retracted:  6.75″  /  17.3cm      (7″ approximately with the end cap fitted)
Fully extended:  18″  /  46cm
WEIGHT: 437 g
This is a fine example of a fairly large but compact  stalking / spotting telescope.  It is a high-precision instrument in excellent overall condition and would make a superb addition to any collection of period telescopes. It is in remarkably good condition for its age and in perfect working order.
Please see my other listings for WW1 telescopes and earlier Georgian and Victorian telescopes.
