Likeany other collecting sector when it comes to models (particularly theolder die-cast models) there is no real substitute for experience whenseeking to add an original to your collection. Here at Herod Models wetry our best to provide an accurate opinion as to condition and alwaysaim to market at a realistic price.
Webase our grading on the captions below whose definitions anddescriptions are taken from a widely recognised grading standard usedby museums. Modifications have been made to accommodate most models.
Ithas become a generally accepted practice to grade items using anumerical scale commencing at the low end (good) with the number 1 andrising to 10 (as new) at the top. It is further generally accepted thatthis scale be sub-divided by increments of which although not clearlydefined can be useful when grading a particular item; for example an 8might well be a 9 were it not for a very minor scratch being clearlyevident somewhere on the body.
Whateverthe grading system used (and we are aware of some web-sites/stores haveonly six levels) grades will always be subjective. What to onecollector is slight scratch and therefore not important may well renderthe item as being totally unworthy of collecting by another. Furtherconfusion is created by collectors themselves who almost always have atendency to over-estimate the grade of their own models and sostandards constantly vary.
Indeveloping our grading structure we have made every attempt atproviding some clarity by which our own standards are set and we hopethis guide also proves to be an asset to you. when building yourcollection.
One final note -where boxes are listed together with an item we will give a brief butindividual description. If the box is a reproduction, we will say so,and if it is original we’ll try to describe its condition as accuratelyas possible but they will not carry the same grading structure as themodels themselves.
GRADE DESCRIPTION N/A- Not Applicable Grading is not applicable to thisitem- This is the usual denomination given to items that are brand new orunused. C01 – Good Minor parts missing, paintwork in avery distressed condition with severe scratch marks and chipping.Plastic windscreen or windows are likely cracked and/or broken. Youmight also find in this category an item in otherwise new condition butwith a major imperfection such as a hole in the casting or with a piecebroken completely away. But whatever it can be generally said that agrade C01 item will clearly display many faults. C02 – Good to Very Good Extreme scratching and chipping.Portions of paint scraped to reveal bare metal. Cracked or splitplastic windscreen. Broken, bent or missing minor parts. An exampleroad vehicle might exhibit a broken exhaust pipe, a train a missinghand rail or broken coupling either of which would render the item aC02regardless of its condition otherwise. Generally speaking models inthis category would be used for parts only or as a starting point for acomplete restoration project. Very poor repaints or attemptedrestorationswill also be graded C02. C03 – Very Good Severe scratching, chipping and/ortoning. Very noticeable wheel wear and likely some bending of theaxles, connecting or coupling rods. Underside/base can be heavilytarnished. Fair quality repaints or restorations would also beconsidered a fit in this category. C04 – Very Good to Fine Scratches are very noticeable andgo through to the primer or base metal. Leading body edges evidencechipping. This grade is probably the lower limit that most collectorswould consider for display. Often denoted as a filler (used forcompleting a set or for display until such time a better example can befound). C05 – Fine Both paint and decals are scratchedor chipped. Some discoloration or dulling (dark patches, toning) of thepainted, chromed or bare metal surfaces. Good quality repaints orrestorations would also be considered a fit in this category. C06 – Excellent Scuffing becomes scratches or smallchips but they are unlikely deep enough to penetrate tothe baremetal. Equally decal scratches may be evident but not into or throughthe finish coat. Any scratching should be confined to less than 10% ofthe body surface. In summary visible small scratches, chips, discolorations in paint, slight wheel wear all demonstrating very clearevidence of use. C06 is what might be called an average collectiblecondition. C07 – Excellent to Near Mint Some scuffing to the painted orchromed surfaces, as would result from continual handling but notserious enough to be called scratching or that has resulted indiscoloration. Additional scuffing to the surface of wheels. None ofthe axles, connecting or coupling rods or other parts can be bent ordeformed. More wear than C08 and possibly displayinga tarnishedbase. C08 – Near Mint Asnew except for some visiblescuffing to the surface of the wheels resulting from being rolled orplayed with. The main body may evidence a barely noticeable scratch /chip or very minor defect. Possibly displaying a clearlycrooked decal. C09 – Near Mint to Mint Otherwise new except for a slightbut noticeable imperfection. Slight is defined as an imperfection thatis noticeable only upon close critical examination. For example, asmall pin-prick in the paint, a decal might be slightly misaligned orthe base, wheels or decals might evidence minor tarnishing. C10 – Mint The item is as new with no visibleflaws it is in perfect condition. Basically as it was when it leftthe manufacturer, unused, never played with. Thanks forlooking
