For sale is an late 19th century pair of Carl Zeiss Feldstecher Verge x8 binoculars with leather case. I believe the early serial number, 5546 (see image 5), would put a manufacture date for these binoculars at circa 1894-1897. The lenses seem to me to be in very good condition – no scratches etc. There is no evidence of fungus and dust is, in my opinion, negligible. I think collimation is pretty good and the focus lenses operate smoothly. In cursive script on the left prism cover (see image 3) are the words Carl Zeiss, Jena, and the initials D.R.P. which stands for Deutsches Reich Patent. On the right prism cover is the model type – Feldstecher Verge-8 (see image 4). The leather strap looks original and the leather protecting material surrounding the binoculars is in good order. The leather case is in reasonable order apart from the closure strap which has broken away through wear. Considering their age, I reckon these binoculars are in amazing condition.
