E LEITZ WETZLAR (Leica) 7X50 MARINE BINOCULAR (1907-1932)

LEITZ  manufactured this model of binocular between 1907-1932. Binocular may be over 100 years old, so for age they are in good condition, and very collectable.

They show signs of age & use, brass showing through paint, leather covering perished in places, eyecups damaged, a bloom on the right objective lens, and some internal particles from black internal anti-reflection coating.

 BUT Binoculars function as they should, They have no impact damage, the Optics have no scratches, and produce an excellent image. Leather case is supplied.

They can be cosmetically restored if desired.

These were My Fathers Binoculars, and I believe they came from The SS Essen which was manufactured in Hamburg in 1923. My Father served on the ship in The Netherlands Navy, after it was captured in Surabaya in WW2 by the Dutch, and renamed The SS Terkoelei. So the Binoculars were probably manufactured by Leitz Pre-1923 and assigned as part of the ships onboard equipment when she was built.

I can’t find a serial number, (which I think is unusual), and there is no damage on either top plate to suggest that the number has been removed.

…Leitzworked on the Porro II design, and after 1907, built a series including a 7x50of brass with leather coverings, (asadvertised in this auction). The Leitz ‘brass glasses’ established the Porro II models as a service glass forthe Navy, where they were to serve for 5 decades.  The specifications of these Leitz glassesare: 7 x 50, 10 x 50 and 12 x 60.  Of thesurviving examples of the 7x and 12x power models, about half have a M’ and anImperial crown stamped on the top plate, an indication that these models wereused in the Navy. In German Navy images it can be seen that the 7 x 50 modelwas used on German submarines in WW1.Whetherthese high quality Leitz field glasses were sold on the open market is questionable.The civilian and military Leitz brochures of the years before 1915 do notinclude these models.  It is improbablethat examples of these marine glasses were exported to other countries beforethe First World War. All three models appeared in the 1919 civilian brochuresof Leitz, where they had never previously been listed.  Those glasses were probably left over fromWW1 wartime production.  In the middletwenties, the 12-power model disappeared. From that time on, the 7x and 10x power models were also offered withcentre focus, as civilian models on the open market. The 7x and 12x Porro IIglasses remained available from Leitz until 1931-32, in both individual focus andcentre focus models.
