Carl Zeiss sloping shoulder Feldstecher Vergr=10.binoculars and caseThese are the highly desirable Feldstecherbinoculars with the distinctive sloping prism housing cover plates inproduction between 1896 and 1906.  Theserial number of 3116 stamped on the frame, would put these perhaps in themiddle of that production period. This particular pair are in very good condition.Some of the black enamel paint has been re-touched. The badly torn leather hasrecently been replaced with soft black leather. The top cover plates have beenacid blackened to help retain the visibility of the solder filled inscriptions.These inscriptions remain clear and nicely visible. The eye cups may very wellbe original and are undamaged. There are few tiny dust specks when back viewedbut normal viewing is clear and collimated. There is no damage to any of theprisms or lenses. The individual focusing is smooth on both oculars. The hinge issmooth and firm and the clamp clicks into place correctly.The left hand cover plate is inscribed Carl Zeiss Jena D.R.P. and the right handplate Feldstecher Vergr=10. Bothretain their original solder filling. The hinge is stamped with the serialnumber 3116. One objective end coverplate is engraved E.W.S. Mahon. R.E. (over-painted so indistinct). The hinge spindle end cap is engraved and solder filled withthe name Chas. J. Gaupp & Co. Hong Kong. The Gaupp company were chronometer,watch, and clock makers as well as opticians and gold & silversmiths. Theywere operating in Hong Kong from 1894 to c1914. The case is in fair condition but it has lost itssprung clasp and its side loops. Unusually, it has adjustable buckles on thebelt loops. The case is stamped with the name Major EWS Mahon RE. Very briefresearch has shown: In 1900, MajorMahon, R.E., was specially deputed by the Government of India to investigateand report on the prospect of an Indian iron and steel industry ,.
