CARLZEISS optical instruments need no introduction at all. In today`svintage and collectors market the West German (oberkochen) CARL ZEISSproducts have a very strong following due their high quality opticsand superb build quality making them still very usable andcollectable and comparing well with the latest high quality opticscosting well into four figures (`s).TheCARL ZEISS 8 x 30 was undoubtedly one of the best small binocularsavailable it in it`s day the 1950`s & 1960`s. At around 500 grams, the carl zeiss 8 x 30 was and is a genuine lightweight general purpose binocular and makes a high quality and discerning alternative to high quality modern designs…..and certainly a lot cheaper!Thisexample I think dates from the early 1960`s, and has clearly been well used over the years but remains clean to handle and use and delivers acceptably bright & sharp images in my opinion. It does have significant internal haze on the prisms – common on this model and no surprise with an instrument of this age, A strip-down and service would improve the image, a new owner can decide if and when this is required. Mechanically it is good with just a tiny amount of play detectable in the main focusing wheel and the dioptre is a little loose. Collimation appears spot on. The underside of the lid shows that this binocular was originally supplied by WALLACE HEATON of LONDON. Thebinocular comes with its original lined leather case, leather neck straps, leather case straps and even the original CARL ZEISS chamois leather cleaning cloth. Thereare no lens caps.Defects: general wear around the body most noticeable as paint loss from the prism cover edges, the objective lens trim rings and the hinge edges; significant internal haze – commensurate with age and use and common on this model; very slight play in the main focusing wheel; dioptre control a little loose; the leather neck strap has had a stud added to one end in place of the original fixing.itake great care examining, using and describing the binoculars isell, and always get a second opinion. however, i am not aprofessional and my description is based on my experience and honestassessment; most examples i sell are at least 35 years old and theremay be other defects…….also, please remember, everyone`s eyes aredifferent…..
