Weight: 1,459 grSerial #718233Notes: Zeiss added the 8X56B T*P* Night Owl models to their Design Selection series of binoculars in 1994. They were each available in either a green wood (green and dark green) or black forest (black and grey) styling. With the Night Owl models it appears the company was attempting to optically and stylistically make the best binocular they could, and their prices reflect this, the 10X56 retailing for $1,775 USD in 1994 and 2,362 Swiss Francs (about $3,448 USD) a few years later. The models were discontinued in the late 1990s. The Night Owls used an Abbe-Koenig roof prism like the Dialyts and were internally focusing and waterproofed like the Victories. Optically they are probably equal to or at least very close to today’s best binoculars Their body is of a lightweight fiberglass reinforced carbon material so their weight (1,459 grams for the 8X56) is almost entirely due to their large prisms and lenses. Among collectors the Night Owls have the distinction of being the last of the leaded glass binoculars made by Zeiss, and although unleaded glass is more lightweight and eco-friendly, there is some debate whether it is optically better than the traditional leaded glass. Considering that leaded glass is used only in some of the flint glass objective lens and eyepiece elements and in not in crown glass elements or prisms (note that crown glass unlike flint glass does not contain lead) it is doubtful that leaded glass actually contributes much to the binocular’s weight. Be that as it may, picking up these binoculars one is impressed by their heft and solid feel.
