Carl Zeiss Jena “Sloping Shoulder” 8 x 20 Feldstecher binoculars serial number 6082 (1897.) A very sound and original example of the world’s first practical prismatic binocular  marketed by Carl Zeiss from 1894 and which made all other field glasses obsolete overnight. All lenses and prisms are undamaged with no scratches, chips or cracks. Optics are very clear for a binocular of this age, I would score at 80%+. Virtually no haze and one small fungus patch each side, both at the edge of the field and not affecting the lightpath noticebly. Eyepieces also appear very clean internally. Collimation is excellent – the binoculars have probably never been opened so the settings may well be still as per factory. The image quality is truly impressive even to-day with  pin-sharp definition, an incredibly flat field with hardly any drop off even at the very edge and hardly any edge distortion – a lamp-post even at the very edge still appearing straight and verticle. The individual eyepieces focus very smoothly and the glasses fit nicely into the hand (what we would now call “ergonomic”,) all making them a real pleasure to use. The deep bakelite eyecups (one with a small chip) exclude stray light from the side, a useful feature. Cosmetics are average and best assessed by looking carefully at the close-up photos. All the leather is intact and there has been no repainting or re-touching. The only issue is the lack of script on the right prism cover – it appears that is was always blank(?). They still have their original high quality solid leather case with its shoulder strap and their original black leather binocular lanyard. (The case’s red velvet lining is a little faded.) A  fine, useable example of a revolutionary binocular where the Carl Zeiss legend began. The binoculars will be very carefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fully insured.
