Carl Zeiss Jena Feldstecher 8 x 20 binoculars serial number 44170. The “Feldstecher 8 Fach” ( “Fieldglass 8 Power”) was one range of the revoluntionary stereo prismatic binoculars introduced in 1894 by Carl Zeiss and which, virtually overnight, rendered all other field glasses obsolete. And this 1902 example must be one of the very first bearing the iconic Kuithan “doublet lens” Zeiss trademark. At 8 x magnification they would have been double the power of most comtemporary fieldglasses and this all in a very compact package – length overall 105mm/width 140mm ( 4″ x 5.5″ ), weight just 475gms ( 1 lb.) This particular example is in fine overall condition for an original, unrestored binocular from that era. Optics are clear with just some faint “haze” (dirt film), nicely collimated (no double image) and with very smooth individual eyepiece focussing. I would rate them in optically at 80% or better. And all lenses and prisms are totally undamaged, no cracks, chips or scratches. They view very well, producing a bright, pin-sharp image with the usual very flat field with virtually no edge distortion that characterises world-beating Carl Zeiss optics. Cosmetic finish is all original, no re-painting etc. The brassing marks on the prism covers have probably been caused over the years by the lanyard (removed for photography) being wrapped around the glasses. The black leather is all present and undamaged. If you are seeking a very straight, original early Carl Zeiss primatic glass, this would be an excellent choice. The glasses have their original leather case, case shoulder strap and  black binocular lanyard, nice still to have all these after so many years. The binoculars will be very carefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fully insured. I never end auctions early so there is no “buy-it-now” price.
