Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Notarem 10x40B MC binoculars serial number 6081590 (1985). The Notarem was a specialist roof-prism binocular produced in the 1980’s in competition with other roof prism designs from Leica, Swift etc. There were two versions, the 8×32 and this larger 10x40B type. All had the revolutionary multi-coated optics, a world first for Zeiss DDR and still impressive even to-day. This example is faultless optically, crystal clear internally and nicely collimated. And there is no damage whatsoever to the prisms, lenses or optical coatings. The special split wheel single/dual focussing also works well. Cosmetically they and smart but not perfect with some loss to the paintwork on high spots – please look carefully at the photos. They have rubber eyecups which can be folded down (see photo) for use by spectacle wearers and these are also in good condition. They come withe original luxury red velvet lined case, strap and lanyard. For full specification please see page from 1985 Zeiss catalogue reproduced among the photos.
