Carl Zeiss Jena DDR “Binoctem” 7×50 Q1 binoculars serial number 3895939 ( 1972.) The Binoctem was one of the premium range of Zeiss DDR binoculars (with the Dekarem and Deltrintem) bearing the prestigious “Q1” quality mark. This 1972 example is also one of the last made to the original 1931 Carl Zeiss design, involving more precision machining during production and with a higher component count than the later simplified DDR 7×50’s. These earlier models are therefore much admired by Zeiss enthusiasts, with general buyers probably preferring the later multi-coated types with their marginally better optical performance. And so here I have put together a “collector’s package” for the connoisseur. The binoculars themselves are in exceptionally fine condition for their age. For example that is the original paint on the focussing wheel (the first thing to wear off ) evidence that they have seen very little use indeed. The paint is still sharp and fresh-looking and the leather with a nice sheen. All controls function perfectly with the feel of a new binocular, very smoothly and with just the right amount of damping. Optics are superb, with perfect collimation and crystal clear internally. The image is exceptionally clear and sharp, a fine example of the legendary quality synonimous with Carl Zeiss. And it goes without saying that the lenses and prisms are all undamaged. But they are still old binoculars and close examination will inevitably reveal some minor flaws. What I have been able to find is some slight loss of coating on the right eyepiece lens, very common given that the moisture and salt in human tears degrades the coating material. But of course the lens itself is perfect and would work quite well without any coating at all. And look at the photo of the right prism cover and there is a shallow scratch in the paint (upper left) but which does not expose the metal. There may be other tiny, unimportant imperfections so please bear this in mind – they are not new. As part of the package comes the original solid leather red velvet lined case, case strap and special two-piece black leather Zeiss binocular leather lanyard, all in good order. There are plastic lens caps, fitted when I bought the binoculars which may or may not be original. And finally I am including one of the original  blue and white Zeiss DDR boxes. Not in brillaint shape but as virtually all of these boxes were destroyed, any survivors are now incredibly rare. The box is one I have had in my collection for some time and belonged to another Binoctem (see stamp on box) with a slightly earlier (1968) serial number 3506384, fate unknown but which would have been a “clone” of the one for sale. I have done the best I could with the Ebay 12 photo limit to show everything as clearly as possible but email with any questions. Naturally the items will be very well packed in a large, well padded box. I am happy to post world-wide – rate just 25. UK will be Special Delivery 10 and EU 15. All postage fully insured and tracked with signature required on delivery. No “buy-it-now” price as I never end auctions early.
