Carl Zeiss Jena D. F. 8 x 24 German WW1 military binoculars serial number353049 (1913). The DF 8x was the military version of the extremelypopular civilian “Turact”, described in a contemporaryZeiss catalogue as a “small sized high power glass.” Itis not as common as the standard issue DF 6x and was probably only issuedto officers and specialists requiring a higher power. Gubas’excellent book The Binoculars of Carl Zeiss Jena 1893 1945.Thisparticular example is just how many collectors like them, totallyoriginal and unrestored. They are complete, undamaged apart from atiny chip on one bakelite eyepiece and a small scratch on the outeredge of the right objective lens which does not effect viewing in anyway, no other damage to prisms or lenses. The only other minoroptical problems are a speck of dust in the right eyepiece at thevery edge of the lens and some tiny spots on reverse viewing ( see photo) neither affecting normal viewing. The individual focusing works smoothly and the glasses areperfectly collimated, no double image. Optics score at 85% forclarity – no binoculars can last for over 100 years withoutdevelopping a little haze from outgassing of the sealant etc. Butthey still view very well indeed with a bright, sharp image.Nicealso to see the original button tab and lanyard still attached, justas when they left the battlefield! There is no case but included inthe sale is a new black velvet drawstring bag to give these historicglasses the protection they deserve. A very nice original example ofthis less common classic military Zeiss glass.The binoculars will becarefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fullyinsured.
