Carl Zeiss 10×56 B T*P* D.S. (Design Selection) “Black Forest” Binoculars – Product Information:
The Zeiss 10×56 Night Owl was a “cost is no object” roof prism with center focus and total sealing for waterproofness/fogproofness. The Night Owls were made in limited quantities and the line was dropped in the year 2000, when Zeiss deserted its heritage of 150 years worth of perfecting the use of lead optical glass, in favor of new “Green” glass formulations without lead. The Night Owl has the very best Zeiss T* (T-Star) and special, “enhanced” P* phase coatings; its durable body is filled chock-full of luscious lead glass. The Night Owl’s fame is two-part. The first is the simple fact that the Night Owl and its cousins in the Zeiss line-up of the 1990s were the culmination of 150 years of Zeiss’ perfecting of lead optical glass, indeed laying claim to the title, “The last and best of the Zeiss leaded glass binoculars.”
The fame of the 10×56 model in particular lies in its being the largest aperture leaded glass roof prism that Zeiss ever offered commercially, and for sure the BEST. They were made in limited quantities and are now quite rare. Officially, the Night Owl was designated as part of the Zeiss “Design Selection” series, full name, the “Carl Zeiss 10x56B/GA T*P* DS~C.F.” The big 56mm objectives boast a construction of exotic “wide-angle tele-lenses of the Superachromat type,” while the very large prisms are of the sophisticated Abbe-Konig type, with “optimized phase correction.” The term “Night Owl” is used by Zeiss to describe the awesome performance of the Design Selection series under dim, challenging light conditions. Of course, this makes them also superb for astronomy! Their wide angle views through giant oculars have a way of just sucking you into the image, and the superlative contrast makes the night sky come alive in a way that lesser binoculars only hint at. For terrestrial use, you will find that even the most difficult lighting situations are defeated by this binocular’s incredible coatings and glare suppression abilities
