Alovely vintage stalking kit comprising a large, early BroadhurstClarkson 5-draw ‘scope but with the addition of a very rare andgenuine B.C. solid brass, side mounted cradle/clamp (made by thelegendary Ernie Elliott of that company) together with a contemporarybrass tripod.

The ‘scope is one of the largest multi-drawtypes ever made by Broadhurst Clarkson measuring 119cm fullyextended, 28cm closed, having a clear objective lens diameter of2.5ins (65mm) and weighing in at about 1.8Kg including the leathercaps and strap. The first draw is graduated at 30X, 40X, 50X and 60Xmagnification. I believe this ‘scope is a very early example fromB.C. as there are still signs of the original lacquer on some of thedraws – on later B.C. stalking ‘scopes, an anti-reflection coatingwas applied.

The ‘scope is in very good condition for it’sage. The leather cover and end-caps have a beautiful patina and thebrass draws have one or two very minor cosmetic dents – allconsistent with it having been used, as intended, on the hill and inthe field but not in any way interfering with the proper operation ofthe ‘scope. The draws operate smoothly and tightly and the whole’scope is correctly aligned with no signs of any misuse. I haveexamined the optics and can confirm that the lenses are all inperfect condition producing a crisp, bright and clear image. Theleather end cap (for the eyepiece) shows a small amount of wear toabout 10mm of the stitching (see pic) but the rest appears to stillbe in very good condition.

I have been told that ErnieElliott made this cradle/clamp as a one-off custom order for agentleman who owned one of these B.C. 60X stalking ‘scopes, so itfits perfectly. I had the privilege of meeting Ernie back in 1990when he showed me around his workshop at 63, Farringdon Rd. andhaving seen the fine quality of his workmanship I am in no doubtabout it’s authenticity.
It is made from solid brass lined withthick felt and has an external screw threaded fixing to accept astandard camera tripod attachment so making the task of supportingthis substantial ‘scope considerably easier. The opposite side has asimilar attachment but with an unthreaded hole, suggesting thiscradle may also have been designed to be used in conjunction with analtazimuth yoke-type mount as well. It’s original coating has flakedoff in parts exposing the brass but I have not attempted to refurbishit.

The tripod is also of solid brass, in good conditionand of a similar vintage to the ‘scope, but again, due to it’s age,showing some loss of the paint coating on the fixed parts of thelegs. The legs are of a locking telescopic design which enables the’scope to be used at a variety of heights, including whilst lyingprone.

I have quoted delivery cost to the UK using R.M.Insured Special Delivery, but I will post worldwide. Potentialoverseas buyers should contact me before bidding so that we can agreethe type and cost of the delivery service they require. Collection inperson is also available but I’d prefer cash on collection in thatcase. The packed weight of the complete kit will be around 3.5Kg -4Kg for UK postage but may be higher for international shipping dueto the extra protective packing required.
