Here we have for sale my Broadhurst Clarkson Telescope with accompanying Turner and Evans of New Zealand tripod.
I understand from its previous owner that it came from Portland on the South Coast, and was used during the 2nd World War for spotting ships at sea.
The tripod looks to have been made for the scope, and the two have lived together for all of their life as I understand.
The telescope itself is in really good order and delivers a good bright image with no sign of fungus or anything unsavoury. The main body has a couple of very small indentations which I have shown in the photographs, but they really are hard to see as they are so slight but I mention them for total clarity.
The eye piece has a 90 degree angled eyepiece which makes use really easy and negates the need to have it as high up as you have to with most telescopes. This can be moved to the top, bottom or either side.
The focus wheel is smooth as silk and has no grinding and is not notchy in any way at all. This suggests it has been well cared for and may not have has as much use as some others out there.
The tripod I think is really interesting in its own right. This has the crows foot military mark and is adjustable in every way. It can be used very high if required, but can also lay flat on the ground when the legs are fully splayed out. There are three short legs integrated into the top of the main legs that can be used in those circumstances. Its marked No 997 and is dated 1943
At the top there is a ball type gimbal which enables movement in every direction and a further ability to angle back and forth.
The tripod is very well made and sturdy.
I am not sure of the magnification, but I would guess it is around 30x
Weather used to look out to sea, or as I do over the local countryside, or simply as a collection piece, this really is an impressive piece of kit.
I have chosen not to polish it as some prefer the original patina, but i have seen others polished up and it gives them a whole new look if that is more your style.
Broadhurst Clarkson were famous optics manufactures and were responsible for making most of the signal scopes and scout regiment telescopes during both wars, so these really were a high quality company. There is lots of information on the net about them if you care to do some research.
