If You would like this item bid on it now as like me you may forget to come back and miss out on a fine item!!!Antique Georgian VintageMahogany Cased Marine TelescopebyJohn Braham Bath Somerset EnglandC1800-1820A simply stunning very rare English original Georgian period antique brass marine single draw top telescope by John Braham Bath.The objective lens with slide cover to to beautifully grained mahogany main body with heavy brass mounts to single draw, very typical of the time for use on ships at sea marked, “J Braham Bath” in italics with eye piece having fully functioning slide dust cover.  The instrument is in excellent working order returning a fine sharp image.The business was founded in 1797 by a Mr. Jackson who sold instruments including telescopes, magnifying glasses and even spectacles manufactured in his own lens workshop. He was joined by his son-in-law, John Braham and on the death of Mr. Jackson, the business passed to Braham. In 1855 he took on a 14 year-old apprentice named Matthew Dunscombe. Shortly after beginning work as an apprentice, he went to London to work in the Braham familys wholesale and manufacturing business. Soon his name became associated with fine quality and reliability, and thus he earned the high respect of patron and trade customers alike. Dunscombe gained many qualifications throughout the course of his life, including the Cambridge Local Certificate in 1858, and a further certificate for French at Kings College, London. When John Braham died in 1863, his sons and nephew took over the business, but by 1874 Matthew Dunscombe was able to acquire the Braham optical business. Braham’s optical business continued until the late 20th century.
