If You would like this item bid on it now as like me you may forget to come back and miss out on a fine item!!!Antique Edwardian VintageLeather Cased Brass Stalking TelescopebyBroadhurst Clarkson & CoLondonSupplied ByJohn Barker & Co LtdKensington W.5 London EnglandC1910A lovely original antique brass three draw stalking telescope by Broadhurst Clarkson London for John Barker & Co Ltd Kensington London W.5 within leather travel casing .The objective lens has a slide sun shield to leather clad main body then three draws, the first is marked “John Barker & Broadhurst Clarkson” in italics. The instrument is in excellent working order, it returns a fine sharp image. The leather work is all in good vintage condition.Broadhurst, Clarkson & Co. Benjamin Martin established an instrument business in 1750. His son Joshua joined him in 1778 and in 1782 he patented a method for producing brass tubing. The same year Charles Tulley bought the firm. His family owned the business until 1844, when it was bought and developed by Robert Mills who ran it until 1873 when he, in turn, sold it to Alexander Clarkson. Mr Broadhurst joined the firm as a partner in 1892, but Clarkson and he fell out in 1908 and Broadhurst moved to 63 Farringdon Road, EC1, naming the building Telescope House but trading as “Broadhurst Clarkson & Co. Clarkson had a top reputation and Broadhurst wished to trade on it, as well as wishing to annoy Clarkson.Telescope House produced very high quality astronomical telescopes from 2-inch to 6-inch in diameter. The building housed lens-making facilities a light machine shop and a thriving brass tube-making plant, using a brass drawing machine patented by Joshua Martin in 1782. The premises also had a showroom and shop, which is still in use today. Between 1914 and 1918, as part of the war effort, the company set up further telescope factories in Watford, and a lens-making facility in central London near Telescope House. During the 1920’s and 30’s, the business continued to flourishJohn Barker 1840-1914 established his first business in London 1870 Barkers initial premises at 91 and 93 (then 43 and 44) Kensington High Street, recently rebuilt under the Kensington improvement scheme, quickly proved inadequate and, by the end of 1870, Barker had annexed 26 and 28 Ball Street where he installed millinery, dressmaking and underclothing departments. In 1871 he moved into 87 Kensington High Street, setting up mens mercery and tailoring and juvenile clothing departments. By 1892 John Barker & Co was operating one of the largest emporia in London with over forty-o departments. The business grew and grew throughout the 20th century supplying all manor of items including field sports, military and marine items made by the countries premier makers. Barkers was eventually aquired by the house of Fraseer group and finally closed in 2005. Barometer makers and retailers by Edwin Banfield lists John Barker & Co. As working from no.71 Kensington High Street,London from 1890 into the early 1900s.
