This pair of antique binoculars by J.H. Steward Optician, 406 Strand, London “The Official Bisley” horse glasses are in a fair condition for their age.Made of brass with leather grips, the eye pieces are embossed with the makers name around one lens and the addresses (406, 457 Strand and 7 Gracechurch St) around the other lens. Between the lenses a small plaque declares: “The Official Bisley”. The binoculars have lens hoods and between the lenses a knurled knob extends the eyepieces to focus.
The focussing knob works well but the eye piece lenses look UN- clean. The leather covering is in good condition. One eyepiece has a slight dent on the edges, and ONE front lens casing is also very slightly dented/squashed on the edge but does not prevent the unscrewing of the lens housing. The black enamelling has a little wear, showing the brass beneath. Both front lenses have marks between the glass elements one has a sort of yellow film ? Even so they still work although a little stiff turning the focusing ring,
They measure approx: length closed (140mm), length extended ” (173mm).
James Henry Steward was primarily an optician and founded his business in 1852. I have done my best to describe them so please do look at pictures closely too.
