Antique IRIS EQUESTRIAN Horse Racing Binoculars Field Glasses Cased Paris c.1910
Ref:DUThis is a nice vintage/antique pair of Field Binoculars, designed for watching Equestrian or Horse Racing Events, made in France by IRIS of Paris in about 1910.They carry the maker’s name and crest to the right barrel and a motif of a horses’ head, within a horseshoe with the word “Hippique” under, to the left barrel, which translates to “Equestrian.”
Considering their age, they are in pretty good condition. They are black lacquered brass in construction and of good build quality, with good optics and apart from typical age-related wear to the finish, they are also in good cosmetic condition (see photos). The binoculars have central focusing, which works well, rotating fully in both directions, albeit it with a slightly loose action. The imaging is surprisingly bright, with just one or two specks internally and a few light surface scratches to the lenses, with no cracks or chips. There is a dent to the outer rim of the right eyepiece surround and one or two small dings, but nothing that interferes with optical performance.The leather grips are showing some signs of light age related wear to the finish, with a few superficial scuffs and blemishes, but overall they are in very nice condition, with no major damage (see photos). The binoculars measure about 3 1/2″ (9cms) long when closed; extending to maximum of about 5 1/4″ (13.5cms). They are maximium 4 1/2″ (11.5 cms) wide at the objective end. The binoculars come in their original case, which is in good condition, with nice stitching and just typical age-related wear to the finish and one or two minor surface blemishes. The buckle and retaining strap are still intact, but due to their age, I cannot voucher for their strength.
Please note there are no straps with this item.
