Aitchison patent pocket binocular andfield glass with leather pouchThis was how Aitchison advertised this ingeniousbinocular at the latter end of the 1800s. Aitchison were producing binocularsand opera glasses from 1870 and merged with Dolland in 1927 to form thebeginnings of a company that still exists today. The company were highlyinnovative, producing a wide variety of styles and models of binoculars andopera glasses as well as numerous other scientific instruments.This concertina design of binocular was patented inthe 1880s and was issued to officers serving in the Boer War (1899-1902).These are an early example of the use of aluminium in the manufacture oflightweight optical instruments. The design is intricate, involving nicely curvedarms, gears and concertina barrels. Although the design appears ratherdelicate, when closed they are surprisingly robust.This particular pair is in good condition with justthe expected few light usage marks in the aluminium. There is no major damageor distortion and they function perfectly. The lenses are good. One of the arms may have had some older restoration.They are clearly stamped with the makers nameAITCHISONS PATENT. 1016 on the objective lens bridge and a serial number, 5953on the underside of the first bridge. They also identified Aitchison & Co.Makers, London England.They measure 120mm when extended, 30mm when closed(Although I prefer not to close them fully), and are 110mm wide.The binoculars come with their original pigskinleather purse but it is a little worn and the clasp is broken.
