Aitchison patent pocket binocular andfield glass (opera glasses) with leather pouchThis was how Aitchision advertised this ingeniousbinocular at the latter end of the 1800s. Aitchison were producing binocularsand opera glasses from 1870 and merged with Dolland in 1927 to form thebeginnings of a company that still exists today. The company were highlyinnovative, producing a wide variety of styles and models of binoculars andopera glasses as well as numerous other scientific instruments. This concertina design of binocular was patented inthe 1880s and was issued to officers serving in the Boer War (1899-1902).These are an early example of the use of aluminium in the manufacture oflightweight optical instruments. The design is intricate, involving nicely curvedarms, gears and concertina barrels. Although the design appears ratherdelicate, when closed they are surprisingly robust. This particular pair is in good condition andwork very well with no snagging or twisting and they function perfectly. There is one small crack in one arm as shown in the photos which has no detrimental effect on the rigidity or function of the binoculars. The four lenses are clean and clear. They are clearly stamped with the makers name Aitchison’s Patent 1016 on the objective lens bridge and a serial number 8374 on the underside of the first bridge along with 1/2. The 1/2 stamping is also on the underside of the first bridge. They are also identified Aitchison & Co.Makers, London England. The glasses measure 125mm when extended, 30mm whenclosed, and are 128mm wide.Various types of cases and pouches could bepurchased for these models. This case is the pigskin pouch type with ball clasp which is in quite good condition.
