Complete Set up for the Amateur Astronomer!
I am reluctantly selling a complete set-up for home astronomy. Included is the main telescope, the legendary Meade LX200 GPS which is universally popular and recognised as one of the best around for the price. It’s the 8″ version which is a large aperture SCT – large enough for some serious astronomical viewing, and about as large as you can get without needing two people to lift it! It’s still big and heavy and carries the well-known quality of Meade manufacturing.
This complete set-up includes the Meade-branded tripod, plus loads of official Meade eyepieces and filters (all in high-quality cases and official Meade eyepiece suitcase), as well as power supply and all the various bits & pieces needed for a wide range of astronomy. I bought this whole set several years ago from a very serious astronomer who was selling this entire set-up to upgrade to a fixed tripod home-observatory. As a new amateur in astronomy at the time, it was absolutely the best starting set-up which has comfortably seen me through all the way to more serious viewing.

This is the GPS version, so much of the work is done for you in setting it up and aligning. It also includes Meade’s Autostar II handset (with the latest version of software uploaded) which is so easy to use – just dial-in what you want to look at, press ‘go’ and it automatically points the ‘scope there (assuming you’ve aligned correctly!). The telescope has Meade’s built-in motorised drive which assists brilliantly in tracking.
I have also included the cable to connect the telescope/autostar to a PC or Laptop. Meade have their own software but I have been using both Cartes du Ciel and Stellarium to help navigate the telescope through the sky. Both these packages can control the telescope from your laptop.
Note it also includes the Meade autofocuser which makes life much easier to ensure fine-tuned focussing on objects.
There’s loads of stuff in the box on top of the basic stuff – all thrown in. It also includes (not pictured) a 2′ long plastic dew-shield, which is very useful for the chilly nights.
Why am I selling? Because for the last few years this telescope has mainly been left in its box as I have children who need my attention every night! I miss using it but I’ve realised it’s a waste of a great telescope sitting there unused so I’d rather pass it on to someone else who is going to get pleasure out of giving it the use it deserves.
NOTE: I live in Aberdeenshire. I can’t courier the equipment firstly, because it’s too heavy and secondly, can’t risk such a delicate, high-quality instrument in transit. However, I have family in Yorkshire so can arrange to meet you anywhere between Aberdeenshire and Yorkshire or other area by mutual agreement. Please contact me prior to bidding if you want to discuss options. I am happy to travel to meet somewhere to pass the equipment on face-to-face.
