A set of binoculars of French manufacture, makers name address etc on the leather case lid. I know the 1914-18 owners name is Pte Phillip Whatley of the Machine Gun Corps, as his desendants are my neighbours, and as his War & Victory Medals were sold at Clevedon (Somerset) auction rooms a relativly short while ago. On one of the black painted faces of the binoculars is stamped what looks like M G, whether this relates to the MG Corps I do not know. Also above this is stamped, what I believe to be the number S484650, but the last three digits are a guess as the stamping seems to have been applied after the binoculars were painted black, and now have a few scratches and a chip in the paint are adjacent to them. There are also two broad arrow stamping, indicating of Military issue. The leather case shows signs of much use, but in good condition for its age, still retaining the case lid srap fastening, and shoulder strap loops, sadly no shoulder stap present.
